Culture and heritage

Moldova's rich culture and heritage is derived from its location at the crossroads of civilizations and empires.

An essential illustration of our cultural heritage – shared with Romania – is the art of the traditional blouse with embroidery on the shoulder, known as altiță. This craft was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2022 in recognition of its significance. The craftsmanship involved in creating these blouses is passed down through generations, and the tradition is experiencing a resurgence in popularity as a means of reconnecting with Moldova's cultural heritage.

Moldova is also home to several historic landmarks and cultural monuments. The Orheiul Vechi Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a stunning example of medieval architecture carved into the side of a cliff. Other notablelandmarks include the Cricova Winery, the largestunderground wine cellarin the world, and Mileștii Mici, which holds the Guinness World Recordfor the largestwine collection in the world. The National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History offersvisitors a glimpseinto Moldova's diverse history and traditions.

While celebrating its rich cultural heritage, Moldova looks forward to the future with optimism, embracing both its past and present authenticity.
